Jammu and Kashmir clothing
Jammu and Kashmir clothing is reputed for their elaborate
design and embroidery. The clothing of Jammu and Kashmir is prepared to suit the
cold climate of the region. The richness of the tradition and culture of the
state is reflected in the clothing of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Phiran is
the traditional dress popularly worn by the people of the state of Jammu and
Kashmir. The gown is made of wool and is of a loose fit leaving air gaps and
spaces to give the individual the warmth required in the cold climate of the
region. The people carry earthen pots and hot water bags in the phirans to keep
them warm in the winters while traveling long distances in the valley. The
phirans are made for both the men and the women of the state of Kashmir.
Another characteristic feature of the Jammu and Kashmir clothing is the headwear or cover that have attractive motifs and designs imprinted on
it. The traditional headgears are made of fine wool and are thick keeping the
people warm in the extremities of winter climate in Kashmir. Women are often
seen wearing the abaya, which is the formal head cover for the women of the
Islamic community.
The Pashmina and the Shahtush shawls are the most
popular apparels of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Pashminas bear the
Kasida design that is unique to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Threaded designs
and motifs are stitched on both sides of the shawl maintaining uniformity in the
design.
